The CSP’s new Physiotherapy Value Calculator will be published on Tuesday 15 September as part of Rehab Awareness Week.

This is a new, interactive website-based tool designed to help members demonstrate the economic and health benefits of physiotherapy-led services. It replaces the previous downloadable spreadsheet, which is now obsolete: all costs and benefits have been updated using the latest HM Treasury values and other current data.

Alongside updated modelling for knee and hip osteoarthritis, pulmonary rehabilitation and falls and frailty, the calculator includes three newly modelled areas, including cancer prehabilitation – every £1 invested generates an estimated £3.80 in health-system benefits, based solely on the value of shorter hospital stays following surgery. Other potential benefits, including fewer complications and readmissions, were not included, making this a conservative estimate.

These findings also illustrate why recovering costs is only part of the story. Some physiotherapy interventions offset their costs or generate net health-system savings; others recover part of their delivery costs while producing substantial improvements in health and quality of life.

Ultimately, the value of physiotherapy lies in what it makes possible for people – improving or preserving mobility and independence, supporting recovery and helping people return to what matters most in their lives.
